Why I Built AquaFindr

I have an aquatics addiction, as do most of us that love this hobby. I go to the meetings, I buy the equipment, the plants, the fish. I trade with other hobbyists. I spend too much money. There is always a common question, “where do you buy fish?”.

Where do you buy fish? Really? This community has existed for decades—it’s time we had a permanent home for buying and selling aquarium related things. The list of where you can buy fish online is actually quite long—eBay, Etsy, AquaBid, r/AquaSwap.

I had a few goals. AquaFindr had to:

  1. Be a dedicated marketplace for the aquarium community

  2. Maximize profits for sellers

  3. Support shipping and local pickup

  4. Give back to the aquarium community

Be a dedicated marketplace for the aquarium community

AquaFindr needs to support hobbyists who only sell a few items a month to hobbyist breeders. Got extra plant trimmings your local fish club meeting isn’t for a few weeks? Try AquaFindr! The Guppy tier is free for anyone to list items.

Maximize profits for sellers

Other platforms charge for transactions of the platform, listing fees—some retain a fee based on the sale price of the item. I want a place where sellers can keep more of their money. With AquaFindr you can keep 11-17% more of your earnings.

Support shipping and local pickup

Not everyone wants to ship fish. AquaFindr has both shipping and local pickup options for sellers. If all you want to do is list items for local pickup, you can! Aquarium clubs use this to make purchases before meetings and then deliver at the meetup.

Give back to the aquarium community

In addition to create a dedicated marketplace, AquaFindr should do more for the community as a whole. AquaFindr donates 10% of its profits back to local fish clubs proportional to that clubs usage of the platform. When setting up a buyer or seller account, you can select a fish club. Your purchases and sales will go to support that club.

Ultimately, AquaFindr is a win-win for the aquarium community—a dedicated place to buy and sell aquarium stuff, and give back to the community.
