Hiking Pack

It's no surprise that I like to make things myself. I enjoy the challenge and the satisfaction that comes with creating something useful. So when I decided to go lighter for my backpacking gear, I knew I would make my own backpack. I built this for a trip a couple years ago.

Ultralight backpacking is all about minimizing the amount of weight you have to carry. Every ounce counts when you're trying to hike long distances with a heavy pack. So, when I decided to make my own ultralight hiking pack, I knew that I had to be strategic about the design and the materials I used.

I started by looking at different ultralight packs. There are some great commercial options out there, it's a great place to look for inspiration. Then I found this design online that was just what I was looking for. It was simple, yet had all the features I needed. And best of all, it wasn't too complicated to make.

I chose to make this pack out of X-Pac, a super lightweight, waterproof and nearly indestructible laminated fabric. I'm very glad I ended up with a waterproof pack, because on my first trip with it I got caught in an area that had been logged recently and was nothing but a marsh. It reminded me of the Dead Marshes from Lord of the Rings. My friend and I got wet multiple times.

Here are some of the materials I used: (all purchased from ripstopbytheroll)

  • X-Pac

  • Spacer Mesh

  • Foam

  • Shock Cord

  • Spandex

  • Webbing

  • Hardware

I'm really pleased with how this pack turned out. It took me a few tries to get everything right, but in the end - it was worth it! It's comfortable, lightweight, and has just enough space for everything I need - no more, no less.

If you're thinking about making your own ultralight pack, I say go for it! It's a great way to get exactly what you want, it is difficult - and you'll wish you had a bar tack machine. If you have any questions, reach out! I'd be happy to help.

Happy Hobbying!
